Common AC Problems in Lebanon, NJ

In the hot weather, you need your HVAC unit to work efficiently to keep your home cool. However, you may experience these common issues with your unit.

No Power

If your unit doesn’t work at all, it is commonly something simple like a tripped breaker. Open your home’s main electrical panel and look for flipped breakers or blown fuses.

A clogged condenser line may also cause the unit to not have power. Condenser lines are commonly located on the outside unit, but turn off the A/C before you clean them.

Faulty Thermostat

If flipped breakers or blown fuses aren’t the problem, check the thermostat batteries and look for charred wiring. Ensure the unit is on AUTO COOL and that you have the thermostat at the correct temperature.

The preset unit temperature may be too high, so try lowering the thermostat by 5 degrees. If the thermostat is over 10 years old, consider replacing it.

Unit Not Cooling

Dirty filters can also cause cooling issues with your unit, so inspect them regularly and replace them when needed. Your manual should tell you if your HVAC filters are removable or non-removable.

Another common cause of units not cooling is a blocked condenser coil, the component that draws hot air out of the house. Sometimes the vents get clogged or have an object against them. Turn off the unit, and unscrew the vent plates to check for debris, and clean them with a soft cloth.

Short Cycling

Short cycling occurs when your unit turns on and off without running a full cycle. Ignoring short cycling can increase electric bills and cause further damage to the unit.

Again, dirty filters could be the culprit, or it could be dirty or iced evaporator coils. Your unit may be too big for your home, which causes the unit to cool quickly. Sometimes, the refrigerant, the substance that cools the air, causes short cycling, but only an HVAC technician can replace it.

If your unit still fails, there are likely problems that need addressing by a professional. Mighty Ducts Heating and Cooling not only provides you with cooling services in Lebanon, New Jersey, but we also offer indoor air quality, heating, and maintenance services.
