What Is A Ductless Heat Pump?
Central HVAC systems are no longer the only way of keeping your home comfortable. A ductless heat pump is a special type of HVAC system with some unique benefits. If you’re considering this option for your home, it is helpful to learn a little about how ductless heat pumps work.
How a Heat Pump Works
A heat pump is a type of two-way HVAC system. Unlike furnaces that burn fuel to produce heat directly, a heat pump simply transfers heat from one area to the other. During summer, it can take heat from inside your house and release it outside. In winter months, it can gather a lot of ambient heat from outside and warm your indoor air. Compared to traditional HVAC, heat pumps are very energy efficient.
What Is a Ductless System?
Heat pumps are available as both ducted and ductless systems. As the name implies, a ductless system does not have big, bulky air ducts running through all your walls, ceilings, or floors, so it is easier to install. Instead, a ductless heat pump system is just made up of three components. Outside your home, you will have a big condenser and compressor that handles all your work. A small tube with refrigerant lines and drain lines will run inside your home, entering through a 3-inch hole in the wall. These lines then hook up to an air handler unit mounted inside your house. This unit will blow the warm or cool air into your rooms, creating a comfortable indoor temperature.
